Grants pass information

History
Grants Pass was originally spelled Grant’s Pass but lost the apostrophe about 1900 in recognition of General U.S. Grant’s victory at Vicksburg in 1863.

In the 1860s, Grants Pass served as a stagecoach stop. When the Oregon-California Railroad (now Southern Pacific) was finished in 1884, it turned into a rail hub.

The county seat for Josephine located there. Josephine Rollins Ort, who migrated to the Illinois Valley in 1851 with her father, is honoured with the county’s name.

1825 – 1843

The first European settlers to pass through the Rogue Valley were Hudson Bay trappers. The local aboriginal tribes that settlers and trappers called were the source of the moniker for the Rogue Valley. Because they battled for their rights, the locals were referred to as “the rogues.”

The Applegate Party, 1843–1846
Jesse and Lindsay Applegate, two brothers, were among a group of pioneers heading west on the Oregon Trail from Missouri. Tragically, they lost their two young sons and the raft that contained all of their belongings at the Columbia River crossing. They vowed to turn around and find a more secure path that would avoid the deadly river.

The brothers blazed a new path from Fort Hall, Idaho via Nevada, California, and eventually the Rogue Valley. The trail crossed the Rogue River at Fort Vannoy, which is about 5 miles west of the present-day Grants Pass, and was on the south side of the river.

The earliest waggon trails through the Rogue River Valley on the way to the Willamette Valley were created by the Applegate waggon train of emigrants.

1851
A group of emigrants found gold near Jacksonville. Their discovery attracted lots of prospectors looking to strike it rich. Josephine Rollins Ort, the person who gave Josephine County its name, was part of the group. 1852–1858 Gold Mining Sailors left their ship close to Crescent City to head for the gold fields in Jacksonville discovered by Ms. Ort’s team. Just 25 miles south of the current Grants Pass, in the Illinois Valley, they found rich deposits before they arrived; these discoveries became known as “Sailor Diggin’s.”

Sailor Diggin’s rapidly developed into a significant mining hub with a few thousand residents. Grants Pass subsequently grew out of this centre. Later, it was renamed Waldo in honour of William Waldo, Daniel Waldo’s brother and a significant figure in the early history of Oregon.

Many miners departed in 1858 in search of fresh discoveries on the British Frazier River. The numerous mining communities that arose in the Illinois Valley no longer exist.

1850 – 1857 Riot River Wars
In the 1850s, conflicts erupted between settlers and Native Americans. The indigenous were fought by local volunteers and soldiers from Fort Jones, California. A peace pact was signed in 1855 on the Illinois River, close to Agness. The conflict went on. Native Americans were relocated to the Siletz and Grande Ronde Reservations on the northern Oregon Coast after they were defeated.

1860 – 1900
Grants Pass had fast growth as a result of the gold rush and the completion of the Oregon-California Railroad, which attracted miners, farmers, lumberjacks, and other tradespeople.

Oregon Caves, 1874
While chasing a bear in 1874, a local hunter named Elijah Davidson’s dog went into the mountainside, leading him to discover an underground cave network. The “Oregon Caverns” are the current name for these caves. 1904 saw the opening of the first cave access road.

Newman Methodist Church, 1887–1890
Newman United Methodist Church, which was constructed in Grants Pass in 1887, was the city’s first church. The structure on the property, currently known as Newman United Methodist Church, was finished in 1890 under the direction of Reverend T.L. Jones.

1890’s
Grants Pass had its own opera house by the 1890s. A dam built by the Grants Pass Water, Light and Power Company produced electricity a short distance west of Caveman Bridge. The Rogue River was being bridged at the time by the first of several bridges around 5th Street.

Reservation for Indians
Mary Peters, sometimes known as “Indian Mary,” requested squatters’ rights in 1894 for the land where her father had erected a cottage on a hilltop overlooking Hellgate Canyon.

During the Rogue River Indian Wars, her father, “Umpqua Joe,” had served as an Indian scout. She founded the smallest Indian Reservation in the country after receiving a 25-year deed. The site was eventually transformed into Indian Mary Park by Josephine County.
